His ﷺ Wives and Our Mothers
as real women with individual qualities and virtues
We often hear familiar names of the Wives of the Prophet ﷺ. However, we do not often hear of their specific virtues, what made them unique, and what made them different, too!
This is what we often discuss behind closed doors in private 1-1 conversations. We wanted to open that discussion up to others.
"I had only heard about them as wives and their position in the family. Once I learned of their specific virtues and personal qualities, I was able to see them as a role model."***
Words to this effect were shared by a friend of mine in one of our 1-1 classes and discussions. We had an in-depth discussion on how the Mothers of the Believers are often portrayed and what we are told about them. Hearing her speak so passionately, I wanted us to open this conversation up to others. She will be facilitating this event.
***Note: This is no way diminishes the role of our Mothers. These words had a specific context. Namely, young women (teenagers or students) who are neither married, nor do they have children.
If we only hear about our Mothers in that one specific context, it is potentially difficult to take real, tangible steps towards improving our character to be like our Mothers.
When we hear about companions, we hear of their characteristics, what made them unique, and what made them different. It's a lot easier to see that as your ideal self and take steps towards adopting that character yourself.
All this information is available in Arabic regarding our Mothers; it is nothing new, but often it does not make it to English speeches.

This series is based on the following two courses.

This is a completely open and judgement-free space. It is beginner-friendly and there is no pre-requisite. If you don't know much about the wives, it's not a problem. We won't be quizzing you!
The sessions are open to all. Priority for participation is given to young women (teenagers/university students), but anyone is welcome to listen in. Mothers join with their daughters.
It may be an idea to share this with young women — nieces, cousins or younger siblings. Suitable for girls 11+ — they are very mature!
-
This is a space to share, discuss and reflect. It is not a lecture.
Facilitators: Fareeha and Ayesha.
Fareeha (UCL student) has great passion for this subject and the quote on the poster is her! Fareeha has experience in organising, coordinating and moderating successful workshops and lectures.
We won't be "teaching" per se, but we will prepare a lot of material and content to get the conversation going. There are so many qualities of these women mentioned in the Arabic texts that just never seem to make it to English speeches...!
Hence, we remain unaware of them.
-
The sessions will be interactive but not in an uncomfortable, pressurising way. It will be fun and relaxed. You will not be asked to do anything you are uncomfortable with. Cameras will be off.

FAQs
-
We cover narrations that are perhaps not as well known. They may not have made it to English speeches and are therefore not as well-known by the general public.
We cover approximately 7 narrations per session.
From each narration, we attempt to discuss and derive an idea of the unique traits and virtues of our Mothers.
We hope this will serve as an interesting and beneficial discussion for all — you may leave having heard something you did not know!
-
This series is based off 2 courses (see above). Everyone who registers is encouraged to review those courses. The idea of this series is to discuss a few points as a group and derive personal benefits.
We generally do not cover biographical information. We also do not cover well-known incidents. For example, in the session on Khadija RA, we did not cover how the marriage took place. This is due to time constraints. All of this information is available in the original 2 courses, taught by Shaykh Akam and Shaykh Abid.

We appreciate that there may be questions. The scope of this series is very focused and specific — namely, to discover unique qualities and virtues of Our Mothers. This is not a teaching session, rather it is to facilitate discussion among students. Questions are best directed to scholars.
-
This course is live-attendance only. Recordings are not available.
The full itinerary is included in the Information Pack for those who register.
